Autism Awareness in San Antonio

Autism Awareness in San Antonio - Little Spurs Autism Centers

April is Autism Awareness Month, and we’re excited to celebrate by offering resources, education, and opportunities to connect within our community.  This month, join us in raising awareness and helping create a world that is more understanding and welcoming for all.

Ways We Are Involved: Join Us for the 2025 Any Baby Can Walk!

This year, we invite all of our New Braunfels and San Antonio families to join us on a special walk for Autism awareness. Taking part in our walk is a way to show your support for those living with Autism and their families. This walk is a significant effort to provide essential services and support for families raising individuals on the Autism spectrum, with all proceeds remaining in the local area to fund unique and critical programs at Any Baby Can of San Antonio.

As we gear up for National Autism Awareness Month this April, we invite you to join us on Saturday, April 5, 2025, in New Braunfels at Canyon High School to walk for autism awareness. San Antonio families, join us on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Palo Alto College for the 21st annual walk for autism. For more information or to sign up to walk, click here! This event is an official Fiesta event, for information on parking please click here. These events are presented by Any Baby Can of San Antonio, Little Spurs Autism Centers is a proud sponsor for both of these events. There will be over 100 different autism, family, and healthcare resources from a variety of organizations, businesses, and service providers. We will have booths with information, fun giveaways, and more at each of these events- we hope to see you and the whole family there!

Tips for Making This Event More Sensory-Friendly:

Large outdoor events can be fun, they are often full of a variety of sensory elements. For children with Autism, all of the sensory factors may feel overwhelming or cause them to experience sensory overload. It is important to plan ahead and keep your child’s specific sensory needs in mind. In doing so, you are supporting them and creating a more comfortable experience. Here are a few of our top tips and suggestions when planning for the walk, if your child struggles with:

  • Noise sensitivity – Bring along noise-cancelling headphones to help block out loud sounds.
  • Light sensitivity – Grab a pair of sunglasses (or come by our table to grab a free pair)! This can reduce brightness and visual input for children sensitive to light.
  • Transitions – Bring a favorite comfort item to help your child feel secure. You know your child best, if they have a favorite comfort item it could ease stress and help with transitions.
  • Routine changes – A visual schedule can ease transitions and reduce worry for children who struggle with changes in routine. Learn more about creating one in our previous “Visual Schedules” blog.

With a bit of preparation, you can help your child feel safe and comfortable during the event or any outdoor activity.
