Little Spurs Autism Centers

Understanding the Process & Finding Support

At Little Spurs Autism Centers, we know that seeking an autism diagnosis for your child can feel overwhelming. Our goal is to provide clarity and support, giving families the tools and information they need to navigate the process with confidence. While LSAC does not provide autism diagnoses, we are here to guide you and connect you with trusted resources to help you take the next steps.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects communication, behavior, and social interaction. Early identification is vital to ensuring your child receives the support they need to succeed.

M-CHAT-R Screening

The M-CHAT-R (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised) is a widely used screening tool designed to detect early signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in young children. It is a parent-reported questionnaire consisting of 20 yes-or-no questions about a child’s behavior and development.

Understanding the Diagnostic Process

Medical Diagnosis vs. School Evaluation

It’s important to understand the difference between a medical diagnosis of autism and an evaluation performed by a school.

Medical Diagnosis

  • Provided by a healthcare professional, such as a developmental pediatrician, psychologist, or neurologist.
  • Based on clinical criteria outlined in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).
  • Required for insurance coverage and access to certain therapies, including ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis).

School Evaluation

  • Conducted by educational professionals to determine eligibility for special education services under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).
  • Focuses on how autism impacts the child’s ability to succeed in the classroom.
  • May result in an Individualized Education Program (IEP) but is not a substitute for a medical diagnosis.

Other

Many ABA centers offer autism screening tools, but it’s important to ask whether they provide a medical diagnosis that qualifies your child for therapy services. If you choose to go this route, be sure the diagnosis meets insurance and provider requirements.

At Little Spurs Autism Centers, we collaborate with Little Spurs Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics and other trusted developmental specialists in the area to help guide families toward the right resources for a comprehensive evaluation.
