Fun Summer Activities for Kids with Autism - Little Spurs Autism Centers

Summer is a delightful season that brings sunny days, warmer weather, and an abundance of opportunity for families to create lasting memories. For children with Autism, Summer provides a great environment for expanding social and communication skills while engaging in sensory experiences. Here are some fun activities to enjoy with your children this summer:

Art and Crafts: Children with Autism often enjoy expressing themselves through art and crafts. Engaging in these activities not only promotes fine motor skills but also allows for an opportunity to expand on their creativity and self-expression. Consider trying activities like scrapbooking, painting, jewelry making, or even designing your own board game.

Sensory Play: One great way to work on social and communication skills is to engage your child in an activity that involves using all of their senses! Sensory play is a great tool to get your children to try new things, encourage communication, and have fun while doing it. Here are some of our favorite ideas:

  • Making your own Play-Doh at home: You can follow this link for a step-by-step guide on creating homemade Play-Doh.
  • Creating a sensory bin: Discover a range of sensory ideas for the summer by exploring our Pinterest page.
  • Designing a sensory obstacle course: Find inspiration and ideas on our sensory board on Pinterest.

Exploring the Great Outdoors: Another wonderful way to create summer memories with your children is by enjoying the great outdoors! Whether it’s visiting a local park or a backyard picnic, engaging in water park adventures, or enjoying pool time, your kids are sure to have a blast!

While these activities provide excellent opportunities to foster communication skills, remember a few essential tips when venturing out in the summer heat: stay hydrated, take breaks in cooler spots when necessary, and remember to wear sunscreen and protective clothing during activities involving direct sunlight.
