Initial Assessments: What To Expect? - Little Spurs Autism Centers

Little Spurs Autism Center is now available to schedule initial assessments!

But wait…what is that?

An initial assessment is a vital first step in developing your child’s treatment plan after they are diagnosed with autism. After this is complete, an ABA therapy plan can be developed that fits your child’s needs.

What is it?

An initial assessment is a tool used to determine how your child functions in relation to their same aged peers, helps formulate a treatment plan, and helps determine medical necessity for ABA services of autism therapy. There are a variety of assessments that are used at an initial assessment to gain the most information about your child.

Why is it important?

An initial assessment is a crucial piece of data. We will use the same assessments every 6 months your child is in services with us to measure their progress and report it to you and to your insurance provider. Aside from that, it gives BCBAs a guide to what treatment goals should be worked on to ensure your child has the skills they need to reach their utmost potential.

What happens during it?

An initial assessment for autism therapy involves a parent questionnaire, an observation period with your child interacting with parent/siblings/assessor and having your child complete various tasks. Parents will be asked about their priorities for service, behaviors of concern their child has, their child’s strengths, etc. A BCBA will then record their findings, write a treatment plan, and call parents to discuss it.

Be prepared to ask BCBA any questions you may have about ABA.

How long does it take?

The direct portion of the initial assessment for autism therapy can take anywhere from 2-4 hours. We will schedule 4 hours (at your home or our clinic) to ensure that we can complete it. The indirect portion, which involves evaluating findings and writing the treatment plan, can take an additional week to two weeks to complete. After the indirect portion, expect a call from the assessing BCBA to go over the recommendations for treatment and to review the treatment plan.

To schedule your initial assessment, fill out this form and we will reach out within 24-48 hours! Please note, our center is not open yet, so all initial assessments will take place in the home. We are excited to open our center’s doors in February!
